The Arundel Ramble

On Saturday 26 November 2022, 26 intrepid walkers set out on the Arundel loop. The weather was clear and dry but a little overcast and the temperature was just right for the challenge ahead. We walked along the road towards Swanbourne lake as the recent rain had left the riverside path very muddy and slippery, the recent rainfall had also replenished the lake, when we checked out the walk a month earlier the lake water was very low. We continued along the public bridleway and up a steep slope on to the top of Arundel Park.

Striding out on The Downs with distant views northwards up the Arun Valley

A coffee stop at the very top under a group of trees to admire the views to the coast over Littlehampton before we tackled the long slow descent down through the plantations. A gentle walk through arable land to the village of South Stoke where we deviated from the planned walk along the river due to the high river level and spring tides. The bridleway took us via very wet and muddy fields before getting back onto the flint pathway to Offham where we took the road back to the Black Rabbit where a good many walkers completed the day with a drink from the bar.
