Stoughton loop via The Devil’s Humps – Report

After a glorious sunny day on Friday, Saturday morning dawned very wet and cloudy, the sort of day where one thinks, “Why am I doing this?”  Undaunted, 21 CYC stoic walkers gathered at the Hare and Hounds pub in Stoughton for the first walk of the 2024/2025 ramble season.   Andrew (landlord) took the lunch orders and loaned a very fine waterproof jacket to a member, no names, who had left their’s behind accidentally.
Waterproofs on, we set off but by that time the rain had eased and it was not long before it stopped altogether and there were even some hints of blue sky.  An initial climb up to Inholmes Wood and a woodland walk before a descent to Wildham Barn.  By this time everyone was warming up so it was a quick stop to remove a layer or two and pack away those rain jackets. We then made our way ever upwards to Stoughton Down and on to the Devil’s humps for a coffee break.  We were rewarded by some great views as we sat in the warm Autumnal day enjoying our hot drinks.  From there it was an easy walk along the ridge, flat initially and then straight down to Stoughton and well earned lunch at the pub.  Andrew and the team looked after us well, hot freshly prepared lunch was served and much enjoyed with drinks of choice as the chat continued.
Thanks  to all who joined us, we had a great reward for our collective efforts.
There are 9 further walks planned to which all club members are welcome.  Details and booking are on the Member Portal, and if you need tech assistance to use the Portal don’t hesitate to contact the office.
