Dinghy Week is a relaxed week of racing, casual sailing and socialising. All sailors are welcome to join in this Open Meeting with an additional focus on families & young sailors. The 2017 Dinghy Week is being held from Monday 7th to Friday 11th August.
Dinghy Week Racing
The main race series is run over 4 days with 2 races a day. There is normally a lunch break between races. Racing is handicap racing – divided into Fast & Slow Fleets, with separate Fleet Races if sufficient numbers. All Fleets are open to all ages. On the final day, a Pursuit Race will be held for adults and a Turbo Regatta organised for juniors.
The racing is run by Chichester Yacht Club members. The Race Officer will be an experienced racing club member. Race fees depend on age and number of days of racing.
Start Racing Fun Fleet
A Start Racing Fun Fleet will be organised for juniors who have started sailing, but are not experienced enough to join the main races. The Fun Fleet is coached rather than instructed. Participants will be learning and improving their sailing following the principles of RYA Learn to Race – but not to a fixed syllabus.
All those joining the Fun Fleet need to be able to sail a triangular course, organisers may request a trial sail before the course. Participants must provide their own boat. The Fun Fleets are tailored to each year’s needs. See Training & Coaching brochure for further information & cost. Parents are actively involved!
Youth Learn to Sail – RYA Stage 1/2/3
This is a formal course for complete beginners or those with little previous sailing experience. The course uses Optimists & Toppers. See Training & Coaching brochure for further information & cost. This is a very popular course – early booking is advised!
Dinghy Week Social Programme
A varied social programme is organised during the week, with different activities every day after sailing. Recent years have included exciting outdoor games, treasure hunts, quizzes, a Pimms Party (for adults!) and much more!
Dinghy Week Duties
Dinghy Week is run by members for members & visitors. The week relies on the support of participants. About 100 separate duties need to be covered, including committee boat help, safety boat drivers & crews, tea bar and entry desk helpers and social events organisers. Please volunteer – your help is needed! All participating adults and older juniors are expected to undertake one duty in the week.
Dinghy Week Organisation
Dinghy week is organised and managed by the Rear Commodore Dinghies with support from the Dinghy Committee, Race Committee, and other Club Members.
Junior competitors – responsibilities of parents
Parents or guardians of competitors under 18 must be in or around CYC or afloat participating in Dinghy Week. Please see Notice of Race for special arrangements if a person is acting in loco parentis, and for details of special arrangements available for CYC members aged 16 &17.
Tea Bar
The Tea Bar will be open all week during sailing, normally from about 1 hour before sailing until about 1 hour after sailing, for drinks and snacks.
Restaurant/ Bar
The Bar & Restaurant will be open for extended hours during Dinghy Week.
